Dromahair to Parkes Castle - Part of Cycle Tours Ireland, East West Cycle Tour
A typical Irish Morning with rain never to far away. Clouds dominate the sky but this does not take away from the the beautiful scenery.
After stopping off at McGoldricks supermarket in Dromahair for some welcome refreshments and a lovely hot coffee. We got on our bikes and continued our cycle for our next destination Parkes castle. What we did notice was how quiet the roads were in terms of traffic. After Ten minutes we turned the corner and were met with a view that I can only describe as breathtaking. Lough Gill lake is situated between wooded hills that seem to surround it as far as the eye can see. We stopped at the old stone wall before continuing on around the lake. The evergreen trees dominate the landscape but this doesnt take away from the beauty as we made our way round the meandering lakeside roads to Parkes Castle. We stopped at this beautiful castle and discoverd that it dated back to the 17th century, sitting majestically over the lake in a tranquil setting, this was definitely a place we planned to come back to at a later date. We then set off for out 14km cycle to the town of Sligo.
